The Moving Average (MA) is one of the simplest and most widely used technical indicators in financial markets. It smooths out price data to help traders identify the prevailing trend over a chosen period.
1. Definition
A moving average is the average price of an asset (e.g., a stock, currency pair, or commodity) calculated over a fixed number of periods (bars, hours, days, etc.). As new price data comes in, the oldest data point is dropped, and the moving average “moves” forward.
2. How It Works

Calculation: Sum the chosen price (typically the close) over the last N periods, then divide by N.

Rolling Update: When a new period completes, include its price in the sum and remove the price from N periods ago, then recalculate. This creates a continuous, smoothed line on the chart.

Crossovers: A “golden cross” (short‑term MA crossing above a long‑term MA) can signal a buy; a “death cross” (crossing below) can signal a sell.
5. Pros & Cons

Pros: Easy to calculate and interpret, filters out short-term noise, and highlights trend direction.

Cons: By its nature it lags price action and can generate false signals in sideways markets.
